15 Skin Care Tips

Tips by Mari Santo Domingo, Skin & Wellness Expert at
Changing The Future Outcome (CTFO)

If you are a skin care enthusiast, or a skin care newbie, trying to get to understand things, today's list is 15 Skin Care Mistakes. Use these tips as a guide to treat your skin in the best way possible to get the results you have been looking for.

This is a time where we need to take control of our emotions, our attitude, and above all our health. Being specific, we need to remember that our skin REFLECTS OUT, and what's happening—on our inside. That's why we are focusing today on helping you to identify the 15 most common mistakes when we're talking about skin care.

Many confuse SKIN CARE with SKIN HEALTH. There's a huge misconception about anti-aging skin care, where women, and some men, think that anti-aging is something separate to skin health. The best anti-aging treatment you can do for your skin is to start—and to keep it healthy!

MISTAKE #1: Applying Products In Wrong Order

In order to make sure that we get the maximum benefit, either we have a skin care line where we just use 4 skin care products—or, we like to use the maintenance, the repair, and the prevention. And that means we will have probably 8 to 9 products. It doesn't matter how many. But it's important to lay them IN THE RIGHT ORDER.

Just imagine you applying your face oils, then go with a toner—there's no way that's going to feel right! Some products in our skin care, for example our moisturizers, form a barrier on the skin which won't allow the active ingredients—such as from an eye cream, or a chemical exfoliant—to penetrate the skin.

Using multiple skin care linesThe Basic Rule is to go from the thinnest to the thickest formula. Many tend to use multiple skin care lines. Big brands spend millions of dollars, studying and developing and combining, making sure that they combine the best ingredients to help our skin. So, that's why when you buy a skin care line, most of the lines will say, "Follow with..." and they're not going to tell you to "follow with this other product you bought in Walgreens." Try to stay with just ONE skin care line. Try your best to stop combining products from different manufacturers.

The best and most effective method to layer our skin care products is—if you are going to exfoliate (which you're not going to do every night)—you CLEANSE your skin FIRST, then you EXFOLIATE, and then you use a TONER. Then you're going to go with a SERUM if you have one; then you will use an EYE CREAM. And lastly we will talk about the MOISTURIZER. And, if it's daytime you'll use a SUNSCREEN, which would be the LAST STEP.

Most effective method to layer our skin care products. Cleanser, exfoliator, toner, serum, eye cream, moisturizer, SPF

Whenever you buy new skin care products, let's say you're just getting started with CTFO and you’ve been using another line, you'll want to introduce one product into your routine at a time, to make that transition, just incase your skin is allergic to any ingredient—that way it will be easier for you to determine what's going on, and then keep that allergic-product ingredient away.

Remember, the CTFO skin products are 60-day empty bottle money back guarantee.

If you are also new to CTFO and just getting started with our skin care line, make sure you use our CTFO SKIN CARE PROFILE. Fill in your concerns; then according to that, we can suggest the products you should be using according to your skin care concerns.

MISTAKE #2: Using Too Much or Too Less

Sometimes you are using too much, or too less, of the products that you are using. Sometimes we tend to say, "Oh I'm not sure," or "What should I be doing?"

Product Amount

This list shows the amount according to the product you are going to use. So, if you're going to use...

  • A cleanser, we suggest you use the amount the size of a hazelnut
  • A moisturizer, you apply the size of a raisin on each side of the face
  • The eye cream, we’re talking about the size of a pine nut, per eye
  • The night cream, we’re talking about the size of a blueberry
  • For retinal and serum products, apply about the size of a pea
  • And a sunscreen, we’re talking about all over the face, so that’s going to be a larger amount, such as 1-grape per body part.

Not to the inside, apply to the back of your hand. When you are going to APPLY, you don't apply the product directly to the skin of your face. You’re going to apply it DIRECTLY TO the BACK OF YOUR HAND. From there, you then apply it directly to your face. And NEVER to the inside of your hand—because, the reason why someone can tell how old you are is:

  1. The eye area
  2. Your hands.

...And we forget to take care of our hands. Today, more than ever, especially when we are making sure to wash our hands 20 to 100 times a day, we need to moisturize our hands. So, when you are going to apply a moisturizer and repair products, do it onto the back of your hand—and DON'T wipe it off! Then massage one hand against the other—then you are taking care of your hands. Don't rub the product off with a towel, nor wash it off.
Use NOT the heart finger. Yes, the ring finger.

Then, remember to NOT use the heart finger, but the RING FINGER. Especially when you are going to apply products into the eye area.

The heart finger is the strongest, and it's going to apply the unnecessary pressure in the delicate area of the eyes. YES, use the RING FINGER, to apply all over the skin of your face.

MISTAKE #3: Over Exfoliating

How much is too much? If you exfoliate too frequently you risk damaging the skin barrier, which helps protect your skin from harsh elements and holds in moisture; and preventing your skin from drying out.

The result of over exfoliation include: excessive dryness, irritation, redness, bumps, and even sensitivity. So, you're better off with exfoliating:
Oily skin 2 - 3 times a week. Dry skin once a week.

  • OILY SKIN, 2 – 3 times a week
  • DRY SKIN, just once a week.

And, my biggest suggestion will be: You will play it extra safe by using the Dead Sea Mud Mask. It will work great for your oily skin, and you can do this 2 or 3 times a week; and if you have dry skin, you can use it once a week.

Shop Dead Sea Mud Mask

MISTAKE #4: Rubbing Products Too Harshly

Rubbing damages the skin.We see people going way too rough on their skin by rubbing it while cleansing, or even applying moisturizer—thinking you are some kind of certified masseuse or esthetician—because rubbing could damage your skin, at the same time it could irritate it.

If you are doing this while you are exfoliating, or are scrubbing, and rubbing it, you want to make sure you are going be using a mask; and when it Remove with luke-warm water, circular motion.dries up you want to remove it with warm water.

...and then massage it and remove it with a towel—massaging in circular motion.

MISTAKE #5: Not Wearing Sunscreen

Let's say you are the kind of person who One of the most important steps.doesn't pay much attention to your skin, and never wears sunscreen. This is an extra step for you that really deserves your attention. Sunscreen is one of the most important steps in a skin care routine. It doesn't matter your gender, you age, nor even your skin color. Eighty to ninety percent of cases of premature skin aging and skin cancer are caused due to the unprotected exposure of UV rays.

Best if SPF 30+ Broad Spectrum. So, it is really necessary to apply sunscreen on all the exposed body parts BEFORE you step out in the sun. There is NO BETTER anti-aging products than CTFO, and you want to take good care of your skin. This is rain or shine—you want to use sunscreen.

It's one thing to apply SPF in the morning. But it is real important to reapply throughout the day. And at the same time, you want to make sure to not just wear it every day, you want to look for a sunscreen that is SPF 30 or higher—which CTFO's is 30SPF. And you want to make sure the sunscreen is Broad Spectrum, which Lighter skin, higher SPF.means it helps to shield you from UVA rays as well as UVB—which are known to cause photo aging of the skin. So make sure you use CTFO's SUNSCREEN & MOISTURIZER BROAD SPECTRUM SPF 30.

And remember, it doesn't matter the color of your skin. But of course, the lighter your skin, the higher the SPF number should be.

MISTAKE #6: Following Friends & Trends

Following friends and trendsWhat do you mean? Well all of a sudden your best friend, or favorite aunt comes, or your sister calls you and tells you all about this new mask that she heard that a famous TV star is using, or she went to this big store having all kinds of skin care products—and she was sold on THE BEST ANTI AGING cream that has all the best ingredients—and you know what? You have to be mindful of...

  • How old is she?
  • How old are you?
  • What is her skin type?
  • What is your skin type?

Following friends and trendsThe fact that she is using it, and it could be great for her, it could do nothing for you, or it could do wrong to your skin. Just because friends are using it, it doesn't mean it's going to work for you.

The same with trends, such as the mask, the eye patches—maybe you don't even need to wear that kind of eye patch?!? And you’re being sold on something that is not going to do you one thing. So, be mindful, because sometimes you don't need it, and it could hurt rather than help you.

MISTAKE #7: Using Regular Soap

Regular soap is for cleaning regular things. Your skin is not regular. This is a huge one. People that are not used to having a skin care routine, the first question to ask them is, "What kind of soap do you use?" They answer, "Soap." That means the same one you take a shower with all over your body is the same one you're going to use for your face? NO.

Listen. Regular soap is for cleaning regular things. Your skin, especially the skin in your face, is not regular. Conventional soaps will strip your natural oils and disrupt the pH of your skin, and will damage the skin barrier.

pH refers to the levels of acidity and alkalinity. On the pH scale, 0 is the most acidic and 14 is the most alkaline. Normal skin pH ranges from 4.5 to 6.5, the ideal level for your skin's protection barrier being 5.5—a slightly acidic level (7 being neutral).

This slight acidic level helps your skin ward off the advances of harmful bacteria and fungi. You can measure skin acidity with a piece of litmus paper. Your sweat with the sebum on your skin form what is called an acid mantle, which has a pH of 4 to 5.5.

Sebum is a light yellow, oily substance that is secreted by the sebaceous glands that help keep the skin and hair moisturized. Sebum is made up of triglycerides, free fatty acids, wax esters, squalene, cholesterol esters, and cholesterol.

So, you need to PROMISE that you will never, ever, ever, ever use the soap, or the gel that you use all over your body—to NEVER use it in your face! So, what should you do?

  1. Clean your face outside of the shower, or take your cleanser inside the shower and use it on your face. This is SERIOUSLY IMPORTANT.
  2. What is that product, besides SPF, that will help us all over? You have to use the CELLUVie®...

A glutathione precursor. Immune system enhancer. Antioxidant. Detoxifier. Radiation protection. Life to your skin from the inside out.

CELLUVie® is LIFE TO YOUR SKIN from the INSIDE OUT! We ALL must use this product! This is the best of the best.Repair, rejuvenate, uplift

And, along with CELLUVie®, use DERMAVie®

And then our skin all over is going to be radiant, it's going to help us repair, help us rejuvenate, and at the same time help us uplift our skin.

MISTAKE #8: Using Expired Products

Like most things in life, skin care products don't last forever. Once the product is opened, the clock starts ticking on these items because exposure to the air, light and bacteria can break them down. Even sometimes you were gifted a product and you say, "I just have a new one, and I don't want to use the gift," but even left sealed, things like heat and humidity can cause products to degrade over time.

Expired products aren't always a big deal/problem. Sometimes it just means they lose effectiveness. For example, an expired perfume might smell a little off, or a dandruff shampoo...you might not see the results you were expecting.

However, an expired product, sometimes can be irritating, or cause other problems. Such as an expired sunscreen...and you end up toasting yourself in the sun! You have to be very mindful about this.

You WON'T find an expiration date on most skin care products—due to a lack of regulations in the U.S.A. The FDA considers only products that contain drugs are required to have a expiration date. This includes sunscreen, acne medication, and products that treat dandruff.

So, when in doubt, is it good or not? Test the product: Anything that has change in smell, color or texture—trust your eyes and trust your nose. Sometimes a lotion or cream may turn yellow, instead of remaining white. Or you open the container and see the product is too oily, with oil on top of it—that means the product is no longer working. Don't try mixing it again.

Moisturizers and skin creams might last a year; again, look at the condition of the product—see the color, texture and the smell. The product may loose the effectiveness, or cause irritation, and possible bacterial infection—which you want to avoid.

Make sure you store your products away from heat, sunlight, humidity—to make sure the product stays well. And, at the same time, when YOU are using the products themselves, when it's a jar, use a spatula to apply/dispense the product out; and apply it to the top of your hand, and from there to your skin. Avoid using your fingers to avoid contaminating the product itself.

MISTAKE #9: Using "Mama's" Products

What do I mean by this? Your Mom might tell you, "You can start with mine." Or, "Do you want to borrow mine?" Sharing skin care products with someone else might cause the other person to get a rash (if the product is too strong for them). Many times the skin type and condition may be different, which can bring problems.

"Repair" products may also be more expensive, and not what a child may need, but someone 20-years older! Thus, the very expensive product is NOT going to the skin that really needs it.

In this case of a mother and daughter; the mother definitely needs the eye cream, while the daughter does not need an eye cream of great strength.

MISTAKE #10: Constantly Touching Your Face

If you do all that we’re suggesting, and you do it right, your skin may become like baby-soft and gorgeous. And then you want to keep touching it to feel the smoothness—but, should you be doing that?

Your hands harbor bacteria. And constantly touching your face could transfer those to your face, which can trigger acne, and worsen your face. So, make sure you leave your face alone, and only bring your just-washed hands to your face while doing your skin care.

When a dermatologist drains a pimple, they apply downward pressure. Dermatologists suggest you not try to do this yourself. Because when people try this themselves, usually they squeeze from the side, and it ends up backfiring, because it causes infection to go down deeper into the pores. They advise to wash your face with a cloth, and if a pimple is ready to pop, this is all the pressure needed to drain that pimple.

So, HANDS OFF YOUR FACE.

MISTAKE #11: Not Moisturizing Oily Skin

Skin always needs moisture.Regardless of your skin type, it's IMPERATIVE that you moisturize DAILY; and apply a heavier cream at night. It's a common misconception that those with an oily skin should avoid moisturizers. In fact, it’s vital that even oily skin gets moisture—because without it the skin will overcompensate for the loss of hydration…with MORE OIL! Then, leading to breakouts, and uneven skin texture.

So, please remember that moisturizing adds water to the skin, not oil.

MISTAKE #12: Using Hot Water

Ideal is lukewarm waterWhile a hot shower feels very relaxing after a hectic day, it is not very good for your skin. Hot water strips your skin of ALL natural oils, and makes it dry. Instead, what should we do? Go for lukewarm water, or cool water, next time you wash your face. This will definitely ensure that your face gets clean, without disturbing the skins natural oil.

MISTAKE #13: Not Washing Pillowcase Frequently

Wash every 4 to 5 daysEven is you're a clean person who takes a shower in the morning, and then in the afternoon, and you wash your hair and have a good skin care routine, you might still get acne or breakouts if you use the same pillow cover FOR WEEKS.

The advice is to wash a pillow case every 4 to 5 days to make sure you get rid of oils, dirt and dead skin cells. It is VERY SUGGESTED that you use a satin pillow case, not just for your skin, but for your hair too. And, it is very well suggested that you pull your hair off your face; and if you have bangs, make sure that you also keep them off your face, or pulled to the back. Just make sure the hair is OFF THE FACE.

MISTAKE #14: Not Separating Body and Face Towel

This is one of THE BEST skin care practices that I have recommend. Use a separate towel for your body, and a separate towel for your face. Use a small hand towel for your face. It is important to keep the towel that touches your face free from bacteria and dirt. Since this is a smaller towel, you may be able to wash it more frequently.

MISTAKE #15: Your Diet

Let's say you've been using the best skin care, yet in certain areas you still feel you're not seeing the results that you want. Here's what could be happening: You need to check what you're eating.

Sugar increases glucose levels, which further increases insulin. This makes your skin produce more oils—and your skin worsens with breakouts and acne. So, make sure you cut down your intake of sugar, pizza, fast foods—for the benefit of your skin, and your body's health.

Another recommendation we suggestion is the TRI-COLOR SALAD approach. Whatever is good for the heart, is good for the skin! Red cabbage, lettuce—eat veggies that have a lot of color. Nature color codes them FOR US! The more colors you eat—the better!
